Growing up there was a lack of representation in the media for girls who resembled me. Being young and impressionable, one begins to internalize that they just aren’t meant for television. 73.1% of film characters were white. 12.5% were black. Hispanics were practically erased (per the 2013 U.S. census). As a second-year student at the number one historically black college and university, Spelman College, I envision myself being a pioneer to redefine the statistics.

A God-given talent of mine has always been to create vivid illustrations with words, sparked from the daily notation in my childhood journal entries. Ever since the age of seven, I remember taking a pen in my notebook, letting my creativity consume the page. From then on, I knew my desire would only grow to partake in the innovative fashion industry. Additionally, I love to read and write, so my journal and I are never seen without each other.  The summer after eighth grade I binged watched Ugly Betty. The show fused together my passion for both literature and fashion, and it was at this moment I knew that I desired a prized career as a fashion editor. As I began to experience all forms of media, I became interested in Public Relations and Interactive Media. My internship with Go Getter Marketing introduced to the world of social media branding. I managed four media accounts, wrote for her blog and other company websites, and shadowed her during studio visits to WXIA-TV.

During my time at Spelman College, I have significantly immersed myself in a multitude of media opportunities. My role as a Staff Writer with the Maroon Tiger, a student-led media conglomerate, where we create content through various mediums including print and digital(video, website, and social) is extremely helpful.  Participating in various professional development programs such as Publicis Media Multicultural Pipeline, Suntrust Diversity Leadership Summit, and Spelman- Bank of America J TERM increased my knowledge of business and media. However, writing different articles and poems, creating short films, website design, editing videos, and journaling are my absolute favorite hobbies and passions.
